Rah Flynn

Rah is an X-ray artist and Diagnostic Radiographer whose work uses medical imaging to explore human experience through the hidden structures of the natural world.

More than two decades working with X-ray imaging has shaped both how Rah sees and the questions she explores through her art. Her work considers our relationship with our physical selves: fragility and resilience, change and adaptation, and the persistence of identity and value when bodies and circumstances alter.

Her Beauty Within series uses X-ray imaging with iodinated contrast to reveal the intricate internal architecture of botanicals. Colour, scent and conventional ideas of beauty fall away, exposing structures that are delicate, complex, unexpectedly strong, and always beautiful.

In Seaward Dreams, shells become metaphors for human experience. Grown, weathered, exposed to the push and pull of tides, their structures carry evidence of what has happened to them while retaining their intrinsic beauty.

Across both series, Rah uses the scientific objectivity of X-ray imaging to explore deeply subjective experiences. By making the unseen visible, her work asks us to look beyond outward appearance and consider what beauty, strength and identity mean.
