‘Let’s chat about’ - Bowel Management

An information session on how to manage your bowels better was led by an MS Bowel Specialist Nurse at Bedford MS Therapy Centre on Tuesday 19th September.

Bowel problems are common symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis.  According to the Multiple Sclerosis Society UK, up to 7 in 10 people with MS will get a bowel problem at some stage, either constipation or incontinence (leakage).

MS and bowels are related because MS can affect the nerve signals and muscle functions that control the bowel movements. This can lead to constipation, diarrhoea, or loss of control of the bowels. Bowel dysfunction can cause discomfort, embarrassment, and aggravate other MS symptoms. Factors such as diet, exercise, and depression can also influence the bowel health of people with MS.
